Unusual book
Livre documentaire écrit par l'ingénieur du son historique de Michael Jackson, Bruce Swedien. Un dixième de ce livre est réellement consacré à sa relation et au travail mené avec l'artiste, tout le reste n'étant qu'une revue extrêmement technique et pointue des divers micros et tables de mixage employés lors de l'enregistrement de différents albums. Je ne conseille donc pas, même aux fans, seuls les gens du métier y trouveront peut-être un intérêt.
A more apt title for this book would be: In the studio with Mic, Hell Jackson! Extremely disappointing for true Michael Jackson fans as the author, Bruce Swedien mostly talks about himself, what he does in the studio and the equipment he likes to work with. His passion for mics is evident and he spends more time and ink going over this than he does explaining what a typical recording session with Michael Jackson was like. We learn one or two interesting facts about Michael's quirks and foibles, but not enough to warrant a book on the subject. Do not bother with this book unless you're really keen on sound engineering and sound engineers. I have no doubt that the manner in which Mr Swedien recorded and mixed MJ's albums was vital to their success, but he already wrote a book about all that some years ago - Make Mine Music - so there was really no need to bring out another book that does not devote more time to the person it purports to be about. It just looks like one more money-grubber trying to cash in on Michael's death. Don't fall into the trap!
Livre vraiment excellent, très intéressant et pas trop "jargon technique" comme je craignais. Une vision objective et professionnelle de la Musique de Michael Jackson que j'attendais depuis longtemps, avec de petites anecdotes, des documents écrits de la main d'MJ, etc. A acquérir de toute urgence pour les aficionados de la musique d'MJ.
Where's this book's editor? Nowhere, apparently.If you like Swedien's work do yourself a favor and do NOT read this book! You get 65 pages of mostly superficial information on the subject the book is supposed to cover. Then you also get more than 30 pages of his apprentices praises (did he (or us) really need it in book form?).You also get a lot of basic or shallow information on studio equipment with very little focus on the kind of public he wants to target. If it were a book for the curious non-initiated, then why write in the 10th line of the compressor explanation: "..and I think you already know enough about compressors and limiters to get you through a session"? If it were for the initiated, why explain what an equalizer is?He could have written about why he doesn't like compression. Or how he feels about the compression inherent to tape recording. Or how he goes about microphone choice and positioning for different instruments/emotional impacts. Or how he gets his recordings to sound controlled while not using compressors. Or if this is an attainable goal for someone who does not have the privilege of working with A-list session musicians. Or why he despises microphone mods while mentioning the he and Bernie Grundman both do not find "off-the-shelf technology solutions satisfactory". Etc, etc.Plus there are a lot of phrases that have been repeated in different parts of the book.Very sad indeed that Hal Leonard didn't give Mr. Swedien the support he needed in revising and editing this book.Two stars only because I love Swedien's recordings and there were a few enlightening lines here and there in this book.
This is not a book for fans looking for an insider's revelations on MJ. It is, however, a marvelous book in its own right. Mr. Swedien is one of the most accomplished musical recording engineers in the business -- bar none. He generously shares insights into how he managed to capture MJ's unique sound on various projects, including Victory, The Wiz, Off The Wall, Thriller, Bad, HIStory and Invincible. The text is peppered with anecdotes and Mr. Swedien's personal commentary, which make the book a delightful read for those interested in the subject matter. My only criticism would be that a good editor could have made the book flow better -- but this does not diminish the unique contributions of this book.
I bought this book knowing that it was going to be more on thechnical side of recording. There are a few chapters devoted to the technicalities of recording but the majority of it has it entwined with working with Michael Jackson. It gives a great glimpse of how Michael worked and gives you a glimpse and how smart and creative he was! There is no other way to describe it other than genious! There will never be another one like him!
It's a okay, but Bruce's other books are better. It barely offers interesting tidbits about his relationship with Michael Jackson or Quincy Jones. Great insight on technical specs for recording engineers though. It just feels a bit unpolished and too brief in some places.
The book is filled with technical jargon but still a good read. Mr. Swedien tells of his recording Thriller and trying to get his dog to cooperate, ultimately having Michael lay the track for the werewolves in the beginning and other little antidotes that make this book worth sticking out. If you're a fan, you'll like this book. If you're a recording professional or amateur, you'll enjoy the behind the scenes knowledge from a musical master working with a Music Legend.
